The Rock & Roll Adventure Races are being held in Lake Mineral Wells State Park, Texas on February 27th, 2010. This event features two races, the traditional 12 hour event and a new 4-6 hour race designed with the beginner / intermediate racer in mind.
The Rock & Roll Adventure Races are produced by Steel Sports.net, a multisport event production company run by Rodney and Katrina Skyles that has been producing events in Texas since 2002. Steel Sports puts on trail running, mountain biking, triathlons and adventure races, with the mission of “being an outdoor adventure company that has something for everyone.” Says Rodney Skyles, CEO of Steel Sports, “Our goal is to be able to help families get outside and get active.” The Rock & Roll Adventure Race has traditionally been held in June and 2010 will mark the first year that the event has moved to February. Skyles says that the schedule change was made to avoid the Texas heat that plagued the June race, as well as to accommodate a larger and more central transition area within the park. ![]() Highlights of the course include the incredible climbing areas located within Mineral Wells State Park. And while the park has some elevation, Skyles suggests that the hills are not so treacherous as to make the race inaccessible for any teams. The race is open to teams of 2-4. Competitors will transition between the traditional adventure racing disciplines of mountain biking, trekking, and paddling, as well as complete a ropes course and some “special tests” not to be revealed until race day. The estimated course distance is 40-50 miles with a race cut-off of 12 hours. While heat is traditionally the biggest challenge of the event, by moving the race to February, racers should receive at least some reprieve from the Texas sun. Skyles anticipates that navigation will be the factor that separates successful teams from those who get, well, lost! In particular, Skyles says, the park features “multiple hills, creeks and draws that can get confusing if you do not start from a known location.” Teams not up to the 12 hour race can opt for the 4-6 hour Sport event, which will cover approximately 20 miles. This race is being held in support of Extreme Missionary Adventures, “a non-profit group that shares medical aid and food to remote villages, as well as shares the gospel of Jesus.” Both the Sprint and Sport events are limited to 40 teams, so if you planning on registering for the Rock & Roll Adventure Races, don’t delay! Visit www.steelsports.net for more information and to register. Racers can tell their family members that they won’t have to wait until after the race to find out what’s going on: regular updates will be posted on Twitter (http://twitter.com/SteelSports) throughout the event!
