The Big Chill Adventure Races, produced by Too Cool Racing of Texas, were held on the weekend of January 23-24 at South Shore Park at Lake Bastrop. Although the race has been accused of being cursed with bad weather in previous years, this year the theme of the Big Chill races was “no chill,”
with temperatures ranging in the 70s during the day and in the balmy 50s for those racing through the night in the 24 hour event. The Big Chill featured three different race lengths (6, 12, and 24 hours) that saw over 150 racers competing. The inaugural 6 hour event had over 50 new racers come out to try their skills at adventure racing. Says Robyn Cantor of Tool Cool, “one of the coolest facts from this year’s race was that every sprint team finished the entire course,” making the Big Chill races a great first event for anyone looking to get into the sport. In the 24 hour event, team Vignette pulled ahead of iMOAT in the last hour of the race for the win. Both of these teams are currently registered in the Checkpoint Tracker Series and will earn points from their finish in this event. The 12 hour race saw team Chilly Dogs win the co-ed division and Flying Monkeys take the all-male category. Winners in the 6 hour event included teams Legacy Outfitters Kerrville (male), Raced by Wolves (coed) and Lame Excuse (female). Competitors demonstrated their skills in traditional adventure racing disciplines, as well as tried their hand in the “special tests,” that the Big Chill has become known for. This year’s special tests featured trivia games, map switching, bucket filling and more! Missed out on the Big Chill races? Not to worry, Too Cool puts on several sprint races during the year. Next up is the Wild Wendigo Adventure Race, a 6 hour sprint race taking place on Feburary 27th.
