Pre Race: Day 2

NORTH TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH 

Another great day in Ecuador.  Today, we hit the road and left Quito behind.  Windy roads took us north and Diego showed us the sites and pointed out the major mountain peaks as we drove.  Soon we found ourselves at the center of the earth!  Correct - the equator!  After being well informed by the local lady who works for the Quitsato project (www.quitsato.org), the sundial captivated our attention as we learned of the soltices and equinox and why exactly Ecuador gets to claim itself as being at the center of the earth!  Luis and I then entertained ourselves by standing on both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere at the same time - what an unique concept. 

Early afternoon we made our way to the famous Placa de Ponchos market in Otavalo.  We bargained with the locals and admired the beautiful alpacca sweaters and scarves and jewelery made from local rocks.  Way toooo much fun!

Back on the road once again at 2pm as we made our way to the town of Cotachacahi, Ecuador's music capital, to meet up with racers at base camp and begin getting their persepective on the upcoming race.  Great energy surrounded the camp as teams were prepping gear and contemplating what the next 3 days of racing would hold.  The pre race briefing got underway in the nearby city of Ibarra and the route of the race was revealed!  The racers are in for an amazing experience!

6:30am start tomorrow in the town center of Cotachacahi where racers will begin on bikes. Luis and I are raring to go and capture the team's as they experience the stunning wilderness and altitude of Ecuador!
